Crashes just day apart

A SPARE wheel came off a truck and struck a car in one of two accidents to occur on Port Wakefield Road over the past week.

Police and emergency services were called to a crash on the highway in Lower Light at around 12.30pm last Friday, when a wheel struck a car.

The Bunyip understands the spare wheel mechanism on a truck carrying an insecure load failed, with the wheel falling onto the road and hitting the side of an oncoming car.

The driver of the car suffered minor facial injuries when the airbag went off, and was taken to hospital.

Then, at around 2.20pm on Monday, police and emergency services were called to a two-car collision on Port Wakefield Road, Virginia, just north of Old Port Wakefield Road.

A passenger in one of the cars was reported to have sustained serious injuries, with police having to divert southbound traffic onto Angle Vale Road.

The circumstances of both crashes are still being investigated.
