The South End Hotel was built in 1859 and traded under the name of Commercial Hotel until 1962. The original building comprised 14 rooms and stables. A verandah was built in 1880, while a two story rear addition and a stone outhouse on the southern side came later.
The hotel was used by the Druids as a meeting venue from 1879 until the early 1880's when the lodge became defunct. It was described in 1880 as a "fine large house replete with conveniences..upwards of 30 bedrooms and three elegant sitting rooms. The accommodation is first class..."
The restored building , which has earned National Trust status is today a landmark at the southern end of Murray Street.
