Lions perched atop table

SOUTH Gawler sits atop of the Barossa, Light & Gawler senior one netball table after a commanding 29-goal victory over Tanunda on Saturday.
The Magpies showed fight in the early stages of the game, and trailed by only six goals at the first break.
However, South’s Sonja Davey was in form and put away 14 goals in the second term to extend the Lions’ lead to 11 goals at the main change.
Tanunda faded away in the second half after having limited opportunities in the goal circle, as Davey and Kate Platten dominated the scoreboard.
The Lions scored 28 goals to 10 in the second half to secure the two premiership points.
South coach Tara Gallarello was satisfied with the victory, but also praised the Magpies’ effort.
“It was a good win in the end, but Tanunda was really good,” she said.
“They’re going to be a lot stronger than they have been in recent years.
“Their goalkeeper hurt herself, which didn’t help them as well.
“It was a pretty hot day, and the girls weren’t used to the conditions, either.”
Furthermore, Gallarello appreciated the efforts of the returning Rebecca Brading in defence.
“Bec and Kayla Vial both had great games in defence,” she said.
“Kahley Scott was also good in her first game in our senior one side as well.”
The Lions will now take on Kapunda, which had a close call against Nuriootpa on Saturday.
“I wouldn’t say we’re confident going in, they’ve beaten us a bit over the past few years,” Gallarello said.
“They’re a very good side, and they’ll be looking forward to a big game this week.”
