PLAYFORD City Patriots Soccer Club is riding high after it secured the league title and promotion to FFSA State League One.
The Patriots’ first team finished the State League Two season top of the table, equal on points with Adelaide Hills, but with a superior goal difference.
The final day of the season was a nail-biter, with Adelaide Hills’ 7-0 victory over Mount Barker not enough to see it haul in the Patriots, who finished with a 3-0 victory over Eastern United.
The Patriots now head in to the competition’s finals series, looking to add a grand final victory to its league title and promotion Patriots chairman Kevin Winfield said it was one of the best days in his 17 years at the club.
“From all my research, the club in its more than 60 years had never done anything like that before,” he said.
“Everybody’s on the same wavelength, we’ve got some good coaches, support staff and managers and they all work together.
“There’s been one goal for the club and it has turned out successful, so I really couldn’t be happier.”
Mr Winfield singled out the appointment of senior coach Ben Moore and the performance of goalkeeper Dan Wojciechowski throughout the season as keys to their success.
The club topped off its impressive first team season with league victory in the State League Two reserves and under 18s competitions.
It will be the first time the club will be in State League One since the 2010/11 season.
Mr Winfield said preparations for the club’s return to the league were already going to plan, with the re-signing of all coaches and players for next season already completed.
He said it was important for both the club and the Playford area to have a team playing in the top tiers of soccer in the state.
“It (the club) has been down for a while, it’s good for the club and good for the district and that will reap benefits,” Mr Winfield said.
“It attracts people to the club, whether it be players or sponsorship, everyone will see the club in a much more positive light.”
The Patriots begin their finals campaign on Saturday night against Adelaide Hills at Woodside.
