Potential bids for 2019 tour

LIGHT Regional and Barossa Councils have discussed their potential involvement in next year’s Santos Tour Down Under, in confidence.

Meeting before Christmas, the councils were presented with a report on the expression of interest process and then decided, in confidence, if they would apply to host the event in 2019.

Race routes for next year’s tour are expected to be announced mid-July.

According to a Light Regional Council report, event organisers and sponsors request an appropriate level of confidentiality around negotiations for involvement in future tours, in order to prevent ‘ambush marketing’ by companies who are not contributing financially.

Neighbouring Gawler Council has already opted not to apply to be a host for the 2019 event.

Barossa Council has been involved in the tour consistently, with the region to feature in Stage 1 of the 2018 event, and for Stage 2 of the Women’s 2018 Tour.

Light Regional Council has previously hosted a Tour Down Under Stage finish in Kapunda, in both 2003 and 2004, and had Greenock feature in more recent times.

The race will return to Greenock this month for Stage 2 of the Women’s Tour.
