South recruits former AFL Sun

SOUTH Gawler Football Club has pulled off a major off-season coup, signing ex-Gold Coast Sun Timmy Sumner ahead of the 2018 Barossa, Light & Gawler A-grade football season.
The 23-year-old utility played 17 games with the Suns before retiring from the AFL in early 2015, citing homesickness as the reason.
He played the 2017 season with Glenelg in the SANFL, and played with the Eagles prior to being drafted at the end of 2012.
South Gawler president Luke Officer said Sumner is a massive signing for the club.
“He’s had a career at the highest level,” he said.
“He was looking for some country football and he, effectively, can play anywhere; he’s a down to earth guy.”
Mr Officer said that one of last season’s star recruits was a massive driving force behind getting the former Sun on board.
“Incidentally, he is good mates with Jackson Press, who was our best and fairest this year; they played together at the Eagles,” he said.
Mr Officer said Sumner’s experience of playing at the top level could have a great effect on the playing group.
“Anyone who’s had AFL or SANFL league experience brings professionalism, commitment and this can be passed on to the youngsters and can assist in developing their footy,” he said.
“They (the playing group) have had a good reaction to the signing, the positivity is certainly ready for 2018.
“There’s a bit more excitement than there was this time last year.
“Our recruitment is looking at shaping up by the end of this week.”
Mr Officer also confirmed that South Gawler legend Aaron Bevis has retired from football.
