TRINITY Old Scholars’ A3 team had a bitter-sweet afternoon against Reynella in Adelaide Turf cricket on Saturday, winning on first innings, but falling just two wickets short of snaring outright points.
Needing just 19 runs for a first innings victory, after resuming at 2/92, Trinity quickly surpassed the total thanks to Brad Cameron (62) and Moe Walker (16).
Ryan Roberts added 20 runs down the order, however a number of failures – including ducks to Austin Smith and Jarryd Furnell – left the TOSers at risk of not having a big enough lead to mount a strong challenge for an outright victory.
However, some big hitting from tail-enders Brad Schaper (39 not out from 15 balls) and Josh Southwell (32 not out from 22 balls) allowed Trinity to declare at 9/246, and have 40 overs to bowl Reynella out for less than 136 runs.
Southwell, fired up from his stint with the bat, ran rampant with the ball and at one stage had the remarkable figures of 5/0 – his seven overs would, eventually, concede just four runs.
However, the remaining Trinity bowlers struggled to capitalise as Reynella chewed up the overs.
Furnell (3/19) broke the deadlock with his finger spinners, but the visitors held on to finish 8/80 at stumps and deny the TOSers the extra points.
