Coffee for a cause

LOCAL coffee lovers can get their caffeine fix and support a good cause at Gawler’s Alchemy Café this Friday.
The café will donate some of its proceeds to support the homeless, as part of a nationwide campaign hosted by Street Smart Australia.
It’s the only Gawler-based café participating in the annual Cafesmart Day, which sees participating cafés donate $1 from every coffee to the cause.
Guests can also donate via a collection tin in the lead-up to the fundraising event.
Owner Mignon McLeod said the campaign was a good opportunity to “give back to the community” and support those who are less fortunate.
“Most people buy a coffee every day, and you’re not paying any extra, so you may as well purchase one which supports a good cause,” she said.
“The rate of homelessness is rising all the time, so this seemed like a good campaign to get behind, especially in the colder months.”
Last year, more than 490 cafés participated in the Cafesmart campaign, raising over $135,000.
