Farewell as toilets are flushed away

THE last remnants of the Julian Terrace public toilet block were flushed away last Thursday.

Demolition came almost a month after fencing was erected around the toilet block’s perimeter and temporary facilities were placed across the road.

The fate of the toilets had long been sealed, following a resolution by Gawler Council in November.

Councillors voted to proceed with the block’s demolition, though it was a split vote with the move passing 6-4.

Two new toilet blocks will be built along Julian and Whitelaw terraces – one at Apex Park and the other at Martin’s Place, 80 metres north of the former block.

Excavators were brought in last Thursday morning to bring down the structure, though the iconic mural on the eastern side will be retained.

In its place, a “pocket park” will be established on the site.

Both of the new toilet blocks are expected to be completed by mid-year.
