The show goes on…at home

THE Gawler Show may have been cancelled this year but a local mum has come up with a fun idea to ensure her kids do not miss out.
Blakeview’s Danielle Foran joined forces with good friend and colleague Alana Hyland to put on a spectacular show day at home, complete with games, competitions, face painting and showbags.
She even went as far as to make tickets for the children, aged two to five, and treat them to a traditional show lunch of chips, nuggets and ice cream.
“As a family we love the show and were sad the kids couldn’t do it this year, so we thought we might just make one at home and improvise and do the best that we can for them,” Danielle said.
“They were super excited, especially our older boys – they were just rapt with the whole idea and just couldn’t wait to get going once they saw the backyard and everything we had planned.”
Some of the day’s games included fishing for ducks (in the bathtub), pin the horn on the unicorn, knock the cans and ping pong cups – with prizes for each.
Cake decorating and photography competitions featured, as well as their own Yellow Brick Road to follow.
Danielle said the whole day cost each family under $100, and was relatively quick to set up.
“We didn’t have to go out and buy much because we already had most of it at home,” she said.
“Making their tickets was probably the most time consuming because I had to make everything four times over for the four kids to make sure everything was fair.”
She joked the face painting also didn’t turn out as well as had hoped.
“The kids liked the face painting but we weren’t very good at it – we were no professionals,” she said.
Following the success of their show day, the mums have now turned their thoughts to some of the cancelled Christmas events and are thinking up ideas for a potential backyard pageant.
