Mullets for mental health
1 min read

A HEWETT fundraising duo are set to rock a mullet for a month to collect funds for mental health research.

David Booms and 10-year-old Bayleigh McColl have teamed up and are ready to get growing as part of the Black Dog Institute’s Mullets for Mental Health September campaign.

According to the institute, suicide is the leading cause of death among Australians aged 15-44, and 60 per cent of Australians reporting symptoms of mental illness fail to seek help.

Funds raised through the mullet campaign will go towards ground-breaking research into the early detection, prevention and treatment of common mental health disorders.

Bayleigh, who attends Hewett Primary School, said he had paid the hairdresser a visit in preparation and had the sides of his head shaved in order to let the back grow wild.

“This is my first time growing a mullet and the kids at school have already noticed it growing,” he said.

“I wanted to do this to raise money for mental health research.

“It’s important to raise awareness because people don’t talk about mental health often enough.”

David said he had previously rocked a “nice, long mullet” at the age of 20 and looked forward to supporting Bayleigh for a good cause.

The local painter said it would be a “fantastic bonding experience” with his partner, Karen McColl’s, son.
