Teen to face court over gel blaster attacks
2 min read

AN Evanston Gardens teen will face court next month over a series of incidents involving pedestrians allegedly being fired at with gel blasters.

Police will allege on Monday, May 25, between 6.15pm and 6.25pm, they received reports from pedestrians being struck by gel blaster pellets.

The first happened at 6.15pm on Navigator Drive at Northgate, the second three minutes later at Roberts Street, Northgate and the third at 6.24 on The Strand at Lightsview.

All three victims reported the pellets were fired by a passenger inside a silver vehicle.

The victims sustained minor injuries after being struck multiple times with the pellets, with the second victim seeking medical attention after receiving an eye injury.

Detectives, along with State Tactical Response Group (STAR) officers, on Tuesday arrested an 18-year-old Evanston Gardens teen.

During a subsequent search of a premises, police uncovered two gel blaster guns, as well as two real shotguns, a rifle, ammunition and a prescription medication not belonging to the man.

Gel blasters are legal in South Australia and are used in skirmish games similar to paintball. The toys look like real guns and shoot water-filled gel pellets which explode on impact.

Eastern District officer in charge Superintendent Craig Wall said police were taking the matter seriously.

“Using gel blasters in this manner can cause serious injury both physically and psychologically to victims,” he said.

“These matters are treated seriously by South Australia police as these weapons look very realistic and it is very difficult to determine if they are real firearms or not.”

The Evanston Gardens man was charged with aggravated assault causing harm, two counts of aggravated assault and possessing prescription medication.

He was bailed to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on July 22.

Detectives are also investigating a second suspect involved in the incidents.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have been travelling in the above suburbs around this time, and has dashcam footage of a silver 2006 Holden Astra sedan with South Australian registration of XML686 to contact them.

They also encouraged anyone who believes they may have been a victim of a similar incident around this time involving the silver vehicle used by the alleged suspects to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report online at (www.crimestopperssa.com.au).
