Speed demons duke it out

THE racing was fast on Friday at the Gawler greyhound track, with a number of dogs, including Black Kruger, breaking the 23-second barrier over the 400m during the course of the meeting.
Race five in particular was a heavyweight shootout, with all three podium spots going to dogs breaking the vaunted 23-second barrier.
The open-class race was always sure to put on a speed spectacle due to the quality greyhounds running, but to see multiple dogs bring their A-game with clean runs was a sight to behold.
The honours went to Paul Bodsworth’s Black Kruger, who jumped well from the usually-awkward box-six to take the lead ahead of second-placed All Out Crazy, trained by chairman of the club Mike Wittholz.
These two set the pace, and it was only in the last 50m that Black Kruger emerged as the top dog, going on to win in the time of 22.72 seconds – three-quarters of a length ahead of All Out Crazy who posted a great time of 22.77. Third place went to the Ray Burgess-trained Bangor Sophie in a time of 22.90 seconds, which in many cases is a race-winning time.
Race nine was due to be the Gawler Breeders final, after the heats had been run last week, and was attracting a lot of interest due to the quality of runners that will also feature in the Gawler Produce Stake heats and final to be run over the coming weeks.
Unfortunately, the boxes opened prematurely and the race was abandoned, and will not be run now for the 2020 year. The Gawler Produce series will run over the next two Fridays, with the final to run on Sunday, July 5.
With COVID-19 restrictions still in place, but being eased, the club says it is hopeful to be able to welcome guests back to racing sooner rather than later. Keep an eye out on the Gawler Greyhound Racing Track page and The Bunyip for updates as races run every Tuesday and Friday.
