Become a Gawler Show ambassador

LOCALS have only one month left to register their interest to become a Rural or Young Rural Ambassador for this year’s Gawler Show.

The ambassador program – applications for which close on August 16, with judging to take place three days later – aim to highlight the importance of youth in rural/regional South Australia and, in particular, the agricultural show movement.

The Young Rural Ambassador award is eligible for people aged 16-19 years old at the time of the Gawler Show this August, while Rural Ambassador hopefuls must be aged between 20 and 30.

Gawler Show president Patricia Dent said becoming a show ambassador can act as a pathway to some exciting career opportunities, with many past recipients of the award going on to do great  things.

“It’s a great chance to have some public exposure, to become involved in the community and especially if they’re interested in horticulture, agriculture, floriculture, it’s a way to become involved at the show in those areas,” she said.

“One of our past Young Rural Ambassadors, Stefan Anesbury, he has his own goat stud, Angora, and he’s now working at Westminster School as their head gardener.

“It opens up potential opportunities, it’s about networking.”

According to the Gawler Show website, ambassadors will be involved with promoting the show, and attending the event on both the Saturday and Sunday, and will also take part in an ambassador workshop.

They will also be eligible to represent the Gawler Show in the Northern Agricultural Societies Association finals, with winners then going on to represent the region at the state finals held the following year.
