Britton seeking final flag

TANUNDA veteran Ben Britton is hoping to go out with a bang this weekend, as he prepares to line up possibly for the final time in Saturday’s A-grade grand final.

The towering forward has long been a presence in the Tanunda forward line, but after playing just 21 A-grade games of a possible 52 in the last three years, Britton said it could be time to let go.

However, Britton, who also played in last year’s grand final loss to Nuriootpa, is pumped to get another crack at a flag.

“I’m feeling really good and excited,” he said.

“I’m just keen to get there, we’ve been in a better position than what we had been in the past few years.”

Britton was also a prominent member of the Tanunda premiership sides that won four successive flags from 2008 to 2011, and is also a former coach of the side.

Looking back, Britton said this current group of players is on par with the four-peat Magpies.

“We’re as good, we probably don’t have as many out and out stars, but we’re pretty even across the board,” he said.

“It’s been really good, I haven’t played much footy over the past few years compared to the past.”

After playing just one game in 2017 and eight in 2018, it looked as if Britton may have kicked a Burley for the last time in his career.

However, he’s kicked 18 goals from 12 games this season, and said the prospect of another flag would be the best way to end his playing days.

“Probably the prospect of finishing your career (spurred me on), we have a reasonable group together, getting a bit of continuity and training as the body’s feeling good, and not have any injuries,” he said.

Britton is expected to line up at centre-half-forward for the Magpies on Saturday.
