Eagles in a form slump

GAWLER Eagles have lost two games in a row for the first time this season since April after they were defeated by Adelaide Cobras 0-1 in State League 2 soccer on Saturday afternoon at Jack Smith Park.

The Eagles and Cobras are every chance of meeting each other in the finals, with the latter side sitting in fourth position on the table, while the Eagles are secure in second.

Both sides were relentless in opening half, with Cobras keeper Callum Piantadosi and Gawler’s Freeman Johnson both forced into some tight saves.

Neither side could gain the ascendancy in the first half, deadlocked at nil-all at the break.

The Cobras made a quick change at the resumption of play, but even then they couldn’t find the back of the net.

However, the deadlock was broken in the 74th minute as Steve Savino coolly finished past Johnson to put Cobras 1-0 up.

The Eagles used all three of their substitutions within the space of three minutes, but it made no difference as they were held goalless for the second successive week.

In the reserves, it was an even worse result for Gawler, as it was smashed 0-6 by Adelaide Cobras.

The Cobras had control of the game from the get-go, and led 2-0 at half-time.

In the under 18s, that result was flipped as Gawler crushed the Cobras 6-0.

Jiela Ajak scored a hattrick, taking his season tally to 37 goals in 20 games.
