Former Eagles make splash on the big stage

FORMER Gawler Eagles Lachlan Brook and Pacifique Niyongabire both netted their first career goals for Adelaide United in the Reds’ 5-3 goal-fest win over Perth Glory.

Brook, who was named in the starting line-up, broke his duck in the 29th minute when, up 1-0, Kristian Opseth intercepted a wayward pass in defence before setting up Brook one-on-one with the keeper, which he finished in clinical fashion.

Niyongabire came off the bench in the second half and was immediately dangerous, but his moment of glory came in the 63rd minute after he took the ball off his teammate’s boot inside the penalty area, beat a defender by cutting inside, before firing low towards the near-post, completely wrong-footing the Perth goalkeeper.

The celebration was almost as good as the goal as he wheeled away with a hand-spring backflip.

Niyongabire, 20, moved to Australia at seven years old after being born in Burundi and spending most of his early childhood in Tanzania. Once in South Australia, he played for the Playford City Patriots before the Gawler Eagles – eventually getting picked up by Adelaide United in 2017 as a 17-year-old.

For Brook, 19, it was his sixth career appearance for the Reds after also joining the club in 2017 as a 16-year-old. He is also a member of Australia’s under-20 side, and has made a sole appearance for the under-23s as well.
