Fringe circus duo’s local connections

TWO former Nuriootpa High School students, Iri Roche and Joe Cornish, are combining their artistic talents to help audiences find “colour and joy in life” and to explore their inner child as an adult.

The artistic duo are the stars of the Adelaide Fringe Festival show ‘Chroma’ in which they present a fusion of music, circus, and
colour.

Iri Roche, creator of the award-winning show Flow, teams up with visual artist, musician, and circus performer Joe Cornish to create a fresh, vibrant work.

The two met and began performing together at the local high school.

They perform on a variety of instruments, and in circus ensembles, including experience both together and separately in the vintage festival, Fringe, community functions, corporate events and with the state opera.

Iri has a 17-year history of performance at the South Australian Circus Centre, including in its performance troupe.

He is a circus and music educator in the Gawler and Barossa council areas and attended Gawler East Primary School.

Joe has been heavily involved in work at Barossa Dance Company for the past eight years, has been working as a percussion teacher in the Gawler and Barossa council areas, and has made a name for
himself as a skilled blacksmith, metal, and visual artist through SALA, and various exhibitions and art stores in the Barossa Valley.

He said their show is about helping audiences find the colour and joy in life and in what you do.

“Life is so much brighter when you see colour in the mundane ‘black and white’ of everyday life,” Joe said.

Iri sees the show as an exploration of the inner child and as an adult, and how important it is to rediscover the things that drive people and make them happy.

“It is important to remember and explore the things that drive you and bring you joy, as this can often get lost as an adult,” he said.

Member for Light Tony Piccolo said he recently met the two young artists and was impressed by their passion for their art and desire to bring joy to the people around them.

“I have purchased tickets to see their show and would certainly encourage others,” he said.

The pair have five shows in Adelaide and are also involved in the Gawler Fringe scene.

“Join the emerging artists as they explore, through improvisational music, and fast-paced circus, their own boundaries, and their artistic connection,” Mr Piccolo said.

“A sure burst of colour for the whole family to enjoy.”
