Gawler Central ends Panther reign

RICK DREWER

THE undefeated Gawler Central took on Angaston in the Barossa Light & Gawler Football Association  reserves grand final, with the Tigers denying the Panthers their fourth consecutive flag in a come-from-behind 7.5 (47) to 5.9 (39) win.
Played on a remarkably good surface considering the recent rain, the opening was tough, hard football seeing numerous scrimmages and ball-ups with no advantage being gained by either side.
With Clint Hill and Tyson Duffield seeing the ball early for the Tigers it was surprising that Angaston registered the first two-goals.
The first came as a result of a holding-the-ball free kick inside the goal-square to Will Moulds, before an advantage free-kick to Riley Bourne found its way home.
The Tigers responded with a goal from Paul Bova, having received from Jon Schulz out of the pack, but a free to Ango's Zac Heintze-Unger restored the lead.
Bova made it two in a row after being on the end of a good ball from Adam Byster, then, right on the siren, Jon Schulz received a great ball from Hill and kicked truly to bring the Tigers within one point at the first change.
Although Harrison Schubert snapped accurately for an early Panther goal, the momentum gradually shifted to the Tigers.
With better use of the ball and method, Paul Puvogel's strong mark 20 metres out, and a free to Tyson Foreman, both resulted in majors to take the Tigers to the long-break with a six-point lead.
The third term was a non-event – a stale-mate with the only highlight being a great opportunist goal, off-hands, to Angaston's Wade Richardson.
Central seemed to lose its mojo and managed a single point for the term, while the Panthers’ five behinds would prove to be very costly. It was tough, hard, ugly, scrimmage football.
Not to be denied, Gawler Central toughed it out, typified by the bulldozer effort through a ball-up at the top of the goal-square, resulting in a dribbled goal to Adam Byster to snatch back the lead for the Tigers.
The battle continued with simply no give or take from either side until half-way through the term, when Bailey Puvogel converted from an in-the-back free from only 15-metres out to extend the lead to 10 points and ensure victory for Gawler Central.
Among Gawler Central's best were Jon Schulz, Sam Dowden, Jarryd Fisher and Trey Mason, while for Angaston it was Jackson Ryan, Bayden Dalby, Angus Adams, Dylan Schmidt and Michael Pech leading the way.
