Gawler women secure seventh straight hockey premiership

GAWLER’S A-grade women’s hockey team claimed its seventh consecutive Barossa Valley Hockey Association premiership on Saturday with a hard fought extra-time win against Tanunda.
The game started evenly and both teams had opportunities to score early, but the first chance was taken 10 minutes in after Gawler earned a penalty corner, which Jay Galmesa converted.
The rest of the half was an even contest and Tanunda managed to score after a goal-mouth scramble with seconds to go before the half-time siren.

Tanunda came out with more intensity and started to pressure the Gawler defence, but the defending six-time champions were able to withstand the attacks on goal while producing some itself that unfortunately went wide.
With two and a half minutes to go, Tanunda earned a penalty corner but could not convert leaving the game tied at full time.
Both teams had a chance to regroup and formulate a plan for extra time which would see the first team to score win the match.
The first period of extra time was a fairly even contest, but Gawler managed to keep the ball in its half and safely away from the Tanunda attack.
The second period saw Gawler move towards its attacking circle and earn a long corner.
Best-on-ground Jessica Szulc passed to Claire Donaldson who hit the ball into the circle towards the right post, forcing the Tanunda goal-keeper into a save. In a desperate effort, Jacquie Rowe lunged and flicked the rebound into the goal, securing Gawler’s seven-peat.
