Kapunda’s finals chances dented

KAPUNDA’S finals aspirations took a serious hit on Saturday as it lost to Tanunda by 86 points in Barossa, Light & Gawler A-grade football.

The Bombers have the leakiest defence in the competition and it showed why early, as the Magpies shot away to a 20-point lead.

Kapunda was wasteful, kicking six behinds in the opening stanza to Tanunda’s 4.2.

Dean Terlich was already getting busy, as was Leigh Westhoff, Lachie Earl and Nathan Petersen-Gray.

The Bombers’ defence was finding it hard to contain the ladder leaders, as they conceded a further six goals to two in the second quarter to trail by 45 points at the main change.

However, as has happened on many occasions throughout 2019, Kapunda completely fell to pieces in the third quarter.

Tanunda capitalised on its dominance around the ground and booted seven goals to one, blowing the margin out to 79 points.

Matt Prior, Ben Britton and Angus Kurtze added to the party, while Ben Schiller got in on the act in front of goal as well, as the Magpies ran out comfortable winners.

Terlich, Earl and Prior all finished the day with three majors, while Britton, Kurtze and Schiller slotted two each.

Brett Dowse was terrific, as were Leigh Westhoff, Lachie Agars and the Pies’ rock in defence, Matt Westhoff.

For Kapunda, the score sheet was bleak as Jay Meaney, Brad Prior, Matt Stent, Aidan Mudge and Josh Freeman all shared the side’s five goals.

The Magpies will host a rejuvenated Freeling outfit this week, while the Bombers need a quick return to form against an in-form Nuriootpa away from home.
