Luethen’s bus stance influences Lib’s decision

MEMBER for King Paula Luethen is likely to be a major reason behind the State Government’s bus overhaul backflip, after the Liberal MP took the bold step of opposing her own party’s policy.

Ms Luethen, whose electorate covers the Hillbank and One Tree Hill areas, announced on Monday she would take negative feedback from the community to the State Government and recommend against its proposed changes to Adelaide’s bus services.

Later the same day, Premier Steven Marshall and transport minister Stephan Knoll announced it would abandon the plans to overhaul services it released for public consultation just over a fortnight ago.

The overhaul would have seen the 228, which services Hillbank, cut, with a number of changes further east in Golden Grove and Greenwith also set to have a negative impact on King voters.

King is the most marginal electorate in SA, with Ms Luethen winning the newly-created seat by just .7 per cent over Labor at the 2018 State Election.

In a video posted to her Facebook page, she said “most people” in King were against the proposed cuts.

“Over the weekend, I collated all of the feedback you (the community) had given me over the past week on bus network changes,” she said.

“I’m so grateful to people that have provided me with very detailed feedback.

“At the moment it looks like most people are saying that they don’t think the changes are most beneficial. And that’s what I’ll be putting on the table with colleagues tonight, in parliament.”

Ms Luethen was one of three Liberal MPs, the others being Dan Cregan in the Adelaide Hills seat of Kavel and Member for Davenport Steve Murray, who publicly opposed their own party’s proposal.
