Miniature trains back on track

ROSEWORTHY’s much-loved miniature trains have been missing for more than a year – but their patient passengers may be able to board again soon.

The popular experience, run from Roseworthy’s university campus by Roseworthy Rail Club Inc, had its last public run day in March last year, just as the COVID-19 pandemic reached the state.

Club president Andrew Hall said he hoped to welcome the public back to the trains next month.

“We had planned to have a public run on the 20th of this month, but unfortunately we didn’t get enough members committing to run the day so we’ve had to cancel and are aiming to try again for next month,” he said.

“We’ve got lots of preparations in place, we’ve got our QR codes, we’ve got bunting to be set up, all sorts of things have been going on in the background to get it all up and ready to run.”

Mr Hall said members had been meeting regularly behind the scenes since mid-last year, but were missing the fun of taking the public for rides.

The club usually holds public runs monthly, inviting people of all ages to come and ride a miniature train along 1.2 kilometres of 7-¼- inch gauge track.

“The guys love getting out and showing off their trains and we just love running trains, basically,” Mr Hall said.

“We are keeping an active Facebook presence and we are still trying to remind people, ‘yes, we are still here’.”

Public “run days” are typically held on the third Sunday of the month, between April and October, and on Saturday evenings during the warmer months, with the club’s Facebook page the place for latest run-day announcements.
