New Gawler history website officially launched

GAWLER history buffs can now view a new online database full of the town’s rich history, following the launch of the Gawler History Team’s revamped website last week.

Gawlerhistory.com, previously called gawler.nowandthen.net.au, was officially launched on Thursday night at the Zion Lutheran Hall at an event attended by Gawler History Team members,  Gawler mayor Karen Redman and Gawler Council chief executive officer Henry Inat.

Gawler History Team chairperson Brian Thom said the old website – the template for which had been created by South Australian historian Dr Darren Peacock around a decade ago – had served
its purpose well, but it was time for it to be updated.

“The time had come for the website layout to be modernised so that current technology is effectively embraced, especially when people are using their mobile phones to a much greater extent,” he
said.

“The challenge to create the new website was taken up and I acknowledge the expertise of David Ward, Tim Kipling and Raff Stomaci who took on the role to create gawlerhistory.com.

“With the assistance of Paul Barnet and Ian McDonnell, and other Gawler History Team members, I believe that the end result truly satisfies the objectives we set.”

Mr Stomaci, who played a key role in developing the new site, said the revamped version will allow more people to tell their stories of Gawler.

“The next step in this project is for more of your stories coming into the page,” he told the crowd on the night.

“Brian (Thom) is the big advocator at the moment, he’ll grab people and say ‘tell me your story’.

“Remember: this website is yours, we want your contributions coming in."
