Sounding out young rock talent

A GROUP of teens with a mutual love of hard rock and heavy metal are bringing people to their feet across the local pub scene.

Sons of Sound is made up of Wasleys’ Kyle Welk, 16, Dylan Belling, 15, of Kapunda, Lower Light’s Toby Trenwith, 16, Anthony Sheridan, 17, of Penrice, and Freeling’s Lachlan Gambling, 15.

The band has secured itself a regular monthly spot playing at the Williamstown Hotel and has also had a live gig at Wasleys.

At the end of the month, Sons of Sound will perform live for community radio station BBBfm 89.1.

Lead guitarist Toby said the band had been playing pub covers so far but was looking forward to eventually performing original tracks.

“Starting off, you have to do songs people recognise, but one of the members has started doing some lyrics for the band and we’ve been messing with some originals the past few weeks,” he said.

Both he and drummer Kyle have a knack for songwriting.

Kyle admitted he first became interested in the drums from playing video game Guitar Hero.

As with a few other members, he began lessons with music teacher Gary Briggs of Tarlee Second Hand and Musical, who encouraged the boys to jam together.

The group started out with Gary on vocals, so called themselves SOS for “Sack Our Singer”.

About five months ago, in stepped Anthony, who said it has always been a dream of his to be in a band.

“I had really only joined the band and started practising with them for two weeks, before they said, ‘hey we are doing a gig’,” Anthony said.

“We played about four or five songs at the Williamstown pub; it was amazing.

“...I really owe it to Gary; he lets us use the rehearsal studio space, he’s really shaped this band together and I don’t think we could have done it without him.”

Bass player and Kapunda High School student Dylan is the most recent member and said so far it had been all about having fun.

“I’ve been playing bass for about a year now and started playing at open mic nights by myself,” he said.

“It’s pretty fun on stage, especially to have a whole band up there with you.

“I don’t really get nervous any more, it’s just fun playing.” Guitarist Lachlan also said the live gigs had been great.

“I got into music by the music program at (Kapunda High) school...then I started playing the guitar I have at home and learnt a few more songs and then my dad offered to buy me an Epiphone SG, which is the guitar I play currently,” he said.

“I love how the band is going at the moment and I really hope we get big one day.

“Right now, I’m really just having fun but who knows, I could make a career out of it.”

Sons of Sound plays at Williamstown Hotel on the first Sunday of the month.

The band will be on BBBfm for an on-air interview and live performance of seven cover songs on Saturday, June 26.
