Special school receives $30,000 equipment gift

A MUNNO Para School has received $30,000 worth of special needs equipment for free from a Brisbane-based company.

Adelaide North Special School was visited by representatives from Niagara Therapy on Tuesday, September 10, after the medical equipment manufacturer approached the school earlier this year about donating much-needed items to it.

The equipment donated to the school included a therapeutic massage chair, an oversized toy train and bulldozer, and massage pads.

Adelaide North Special School deputy principal Danica Wuttke said the donation would help students from primary to senior school.

“The massage equipment will help with our students who have mobility impairments to improve their circulation,” she said.

“The train and bulldozer have been embraced by our junior primary students, it helps them self-regulate their behaviour so they can transition to learning better.”

Niagara Therapy has been operating in Australia for 50 years, and has donated free medical equipment to 17 special needs schools across the country.

In a letter to the school, Niagara Therapy special projects manager Keith Meiforth said the company sought “nothing in return” for the donations.

“This is simply a part of our community activities,” he stated.

“The owners of this company are philanthropists at heart and love being involved in what they do.”

Ms Wuttke said students were already benefitting from the new equipment.

“With a lot of our non-verbal students, their body language conveys the message; we’ve got the biggest smiles from our students,” she said.

“They’re playing with each other on the toys, which are also gently massaging too.

“The big massage chair is now located in our library and our senior students go down there during their library time and make use of it as a relaxation tool before they go home.

“We’re truly for grateful and privileged to receive this substantial donation.

“It’s such a substantial gift, which benefits our students.”
