Sporting phenom makes her mark

KAPUNDA’S Darcie Brown is far from a one-trick pony, but the 17-year-old multi-sport star is making waves as a fast bowler for the Adelaide Strikers this season as her squad’s youngest player.

Having lived in Kapunda her whole life and attending Kapunda High School until 2019, Ms Brown made the move to Henley High School to be a part of its highly regarded sports program, and it appears to be paying dividends.

“It was mainly because of the sports program there,” she said.

“I knew I’d be spending some time away, so I thought they’d be pretty accommodating, and they were really helpful with planning my subjects so I can complete them as easy as possible with my schedule.”

Ms Brown has also played in Senior One grade netball grand finals, and has a background in football as well, but for now, she said cricket has taken her sole focus.

“I’ve got two older brothers that play cricket, as well as my dad, so we’d always play in the front yard,” she said.

“I did Milo cricket when I was younger, but I stopped for a bit, and then for a while I was looking for another summer sport to play with basketball.

“I tried tennis, and summer netball, and then eventually went back to cricket where I made the state team and figured I might stick to it.

“I’ve probably actually played more footy than cricket – I used to play with the boys in Kapunda, and then the girls competition when it started – and that led to Central District, and the state team and Adelaide Crows academy and things like that.

“I love the game, but I suppose I’ve been given quite a lot of really cool opportunities in cricket at the moment so I want to see what I can do with it.”

Ms Brown debuted for the Strikers on October 25, when she took 3/13 in four overs – the maximum amount of overs a player can bowl in a T20 game.

As a right-arm fast bowler, she consistently bowls in the 120km/h range, and has proven herself to be one of the most promising young quicks in the country.
