Success in Westhoff blood

THE Westhoff name is synonymous with the Tanunda Football Club.

Danny Westhoff was a champion footballer for the Magpies, his wife Robyn was a terrific netballer for the club, while their sons Leigh, Justin and Matt have all made their mark on the club in one way or another.

While Justin has completed his 13th season on Port Adelaide’s list in the AFL, his brothers Leigh and Matt are preparing to take their home club back to the promised land of another Barossa, Light & Gawler Football Association A-grade flag.

Leigh was a part of the Magpies’ most recent premiership in 2011, when they easily dismantled Willaston despite kicking 11.30 for the day, but said winning the flag alongside his brother would be a cracking milestone.

“It would be amazing with Matt here now, it’d be pretty good considering our age, as we’re both in our 30s,” he said.

Matt echoed his brother’s sentiments, and reflected on last year’s loss to Nuriootpa.

“It’d be pretty good (to win), our opportunities are running out these days,” he said.

“Hopefully come next week, it’ll be a different story to last year.”

Both Leigh and Matt played well in the Magpies’ loss to the Tigers in 2018, but they said the youngsters coming through the ranks have taken them to another level again this year.

“We haven’t changed too much,” Matt said.

“We have brought a few new blokes in…it’s probably more of the young kids, we had more fringe players last year whereas this year we’re pretty solid, which is good,” Leigh said.

“That, and the experience of ‘Terls’ (coach Dean Terlich) in his second year has helped, we’ve become used to his playing style a bit more.”

Matt had traditionally played more of his football as a forward, but this year has moved to defence, and Leigh said it’s been terrific to see him dominating down back.

“It’s been a bit different this year,” he said.

“He’s probably played his best footy at Tanunda this year.”
