THE Gawler and District
Swimming Team took out
the Country Division One
State Championship after
an action-packed day at the
Marion Aquatic Centre on
March 26.
The team was made up of 16
swimmers from Gawler East,
Immanuel, Hewett, Xavier
and Trinity College – finishing
676 points ahead of Hills
in second, with Barossa &
Light in third.
Students were selected after
trialling early in term one,
with many students training
hard for their local clubs at the
Gawler Gators and STARplex.
Gawler East Primary School
teacher Jake Asher said it was
an impressive showing from
the young locals.
“Of our 16 swimmers, nine
of them managed to come
away with a gold medal for
placing first in their event,” he
said.
“It was an amazing team
performance from all the
swimmers, considering we
were one of teams with the
lowest number of competitors.
“Hopefully we can select
another strong team next year
if we retain some members
of this year’s team and get a
strong number of students
coming out and having a go at
trials.”
Angus Sloane and Miella
Curthoys-Davies were the top
performers for the winning
team, earning three gold medals
each for their individual
events, with Isabella Dowler
also contributing strongly with
two golds of her own.
