Ballers ready for Nationals
1 min read

THE Central Districts Lions under 14 side will be off to Ballarat next month to compete in the Club Nationals basketball competition.

The tournament will see the Lions’ youngsters face off against some of Australia’s best and brightest talents.

The group of lads have had great success in recent years, as they claimed four under 12 titles back in 2017; the division one summer championship; the state championship; and were a finalist in the National Junior Classics in Melbourne this year.

One of the side’s stars, Beau Ryan, said he’s eager to get on the court.

I’m keen to play in the good competition, there’ll be some big bodies,” he said.

“Winning (Nationals) alongside my friends was great, I was nervous throughout the whole thing.

“I reckon we’ll do alright, we’ll aim for top five.

“It’s a big achievement to go to Ballarat, not just for me, but the whole team.”

The team finished sixth at National Junior Classics in June, and Beau said they’re looking at some different tactics ahead of the Club Nationals competition.

“We’re learning a few more plays and working on our post defence,” he said.

“My eventual dream, I’d love to go to a good league and play in the NBL or the NBA.”

Beau’s dad, Troy, alongside a few other parents, are rallying to raise funds to help the side in its quest to become the top dog in junior basketball.

“We’ve already raised $6000, we’re trying to look for some sponsorships for uniforms and stuff like that,” he said.

“We’re hoping to raise over $10,000.

“Beau received some money from Gawler Council through a grant as well, which has been great.”
