Bowling club gets $200k boost
1 min read

ANGASTON Bowling Club’s new home ground facility will be bolstered by a $200,000 State  Government grant.

The club successfully applied for the funding through the Community, Recreation and Sport Facilities Program, with the grant allowing it to install multiple playing surfaces and build new club rooms at its soon-to-be home on Valley Road.

Club president Ian Cockroft hoped to see the club grow as a result of the new facilities.

“This is extremely good news for the Angaston Bowling Club,” he said.

“It is a major step taken towards achieving the goal of a new facility, which will be utilised by the whole community.

“We are extremely grateful to the State Government for their support of this project.”

He added club treasurer Neville Smith had spent 20 years trying to find the club a new home to grow its membership.

“So, you can imagine he is ecstatic,” Mr Cockroft said.

“We have, in the past, been restricted with membership growth, holding finals and larger tournaments due to only having one green.

“This expansion will attract more bowlers to the Barossa for tournaments and hopefully state and regional events.”

The club currently has plans to build a $1.5 million bowls complex on Valley Road, Angaston, and in the process leave its current home on Newcastle Street, which only has room for one bowling green.

Member for Schubert Stephan Knoll said the Barossa had “been lucky” to receive a number of sport and recreation grants.

“I’m excited to be delivering more funding for local sport in the Barossa,” he said.

“This grant will help Angaston Bowling Club to get their exciting new headquarters under way, which will be purpose-built to cater for bigger competition and will also have the capacity to host large community functions.”
